Brushless motors: selection and propeller-free testing

Stator dimensions, KV, shaft diameter, mounting pattern and supply recommendations are separate specifications. KV describes unloaded speed per volt, not thrust. Use the manufacturer's battery and propeller recommendations.

Guide notes

Read the specifications

Stator dimensions, KV, shaft diameter, mounting pattern and supply recommendations are separate specifications. KV describes unloaded speed per volt, not thrust. Use the manufacturer's battery and propeller recommendations.

Check the expected load

Aircraft weight, propeller size, pitch and battery voltage affect load. Compare manufacturer thrust data with ESC capability. Power wiring, connectors and the battery must also support the intended configuration.

Inspect the installation

Turn each motor by hand and check bearings, bell, magnets and cables. Screws must not reach the windings. Secure motor wires to the arms with repair slack and adequate propeller clearance.

Test without propellers

Use the Betaflight Motors tab to check numbering and direction with short, low-output tests. Disconnect for rubbing, unusual sound, failure to spin or rapid heating. Repeat after motor or ESC replacement.
